Wow, what a wonderfully full season it has been for us here at Echoes!

Since the middle of October, we have covered a wedding in Atlanta, conducted 5 family sessions (3 of them in Johnson City) and conducted 2 school portrait days in the local area! As we tie up loose ends (completing order logistics, making numerous trips to the printer and post office), we just want to say "thank you". Thank you so much folks for allowing us to spend time with you and your children. You welcome us into your lives, and even your homes, to have us provide images that portray the love within your family and the growth in your children.

We gained two new clients this Fall, and the rest were returning, seasoned Echoes clients!

In an effort to both thank you, and to grow, we would like to extend 15% off your session fee and CD for next Spring! All you have to do is refer us to a new client for the Spring! (Their session, of course, has to come through. :) That is almost a $50 savings off an already low price! Be sure to contact us for further details!

Thank you everyone! We are off again to Atlanta for another photo session this month. Perhaps we can squeeze in a few more before the weather turns too cold!

Fall means Friends

I love Fall family photo sessions! Wow that's a mouth-full! The leaves, the clothing layers and the cool misty air. This time of year also means a session with loyal clients such as the Bookout family! It has been awesome to witness their family expand to 4 over the years! I still can't believe it sometimes... I get to photograph such wonderful families. I'm looking forward to next year already. :)

What a great family! Each member is so wonderfully unique and beautiful. It has been amazing to watch them all grow the last few years.

They are one of our faithful Johnson City clients, and have offered their gorgeous farm, complete with rustic barn, to Echoes as another session location! We are so grateful to expand in this way! Thanks guys!

So it has been a while. A long while.

But we're glad to be back! 2011 is beautifully losing its winter slumber. That means that Echoes is gearing up for the inevitable and welcomed springtime! This spring looks a little different for us. We are expecting a little one in late June/early July, so we are furiously fitting in our April and May sessions to give plenty of prep time for our son's arrival. Yes, we said SON! Don't worry, there will be plenty of his images plastered all over the site in the years to come.

avoid pretty poison

There is nothing more organic looking and overall beautiful as a loved one framed by nature's canopy: albeit in the form of an old oak tree, tall and billowing grasses or a spreading and luscious vine. We are certain this is one of our more random posts, but we thought it might be truly helpful to the outdoor/natural light photographer to know (or be refreshed) on poison leaf identification! I (Kassie) must admit that I have untrained eyes.

I grew up romping in the pine forest laden with kudzu behind my childhood home. My cousin and I played Davey Crockett and built forts out of fallen trees and moss. And fortunately, oh so miraculously, I have never experienced the misery of rhus dermatitis- caused by poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac. I know, I am a lucky tom-boy girl! I blame my never having been affected by it on not possessing a keen eye for identification. Lack of exposure is certainly not to blame! So I thought I would educate myself and the masses (a.k.a. all three of you) that read our blog!

This is certainly not comprehensive, but I wanted to share a bit of what I discovered.

Virginia Creeper: I often mistake this local, prevalent beauty for poison ivy. Looking at them through these images, I wonder why I question myself since the differences are so obvious. Though when out and about with my allergic husband, I find myself more cautious. The similarities: All three are climbing vines (and poison ivy can be a free-standing shrub). The vine of poison ivy is rope-like as well. All three are often found at the base of trees. The visual differences: both poison ivy and oak have 3 leaves unlike their 5-leaf family member the VA creeper. Lastly, poison ivy and oak are often oily- though this isn't always the case.

Hopefully this is in some way helpful!

Most importantly, when in doubt, stay out! I made that up. :)

Phoebe Rose Miller and her family are huge parts of our experience here in Asheville, and we love them dearly. Miss Phoebe was recently diagnosed with chiari-malformation type 1... a genetic disease that will require multiple brain surgeries throughout her lifetime. Even with adequate insurance, tens of thousands of dollars will not be covered for her first surgery scheduled for next month. Because of this need, we are a part of a fundraiser for Phoebe and her family that will occur Saturday August 7th!

I've been reminiscing about the work we've done in 2009. Wow, it's amazing what stages of life we have been privileged to record and quite literally be a part of. The images above are from our friends Molly and Dave's wedding this past Fall. The sacred occasion took place at Claxton Farms, an absolutely beautiful site! The bottom photo is the split rail fence leading up to the old barn where the reception was held. Just two weeks later, the structure burned to the ground! What an honor to have been a part of one of its many celebrations the structure housed within its arms.

This is Emily.

As I mentioned in previous posts, Emily travelled up from ATL to help us out with our marathon wedding weekend! Since Pete was officiating the ceremony on Sunday, and had the rehearsal to attend on Saturday, we were in need of another artist ready and willing to help photograph these occasions.

In short, Emily and I went through the same art program together in college. We helped one another pass long hours in the pottery lab and darkroom. We can attest to many adventures in our creative pursuits... let's just say that we are "all or nothing" kind of people! Though Emily has a great eye for photography, she has been most often seen painting and making stellar metal and glass sculptures! You could say that our house is really Emily's gallery: everything from the welded lamp in Pete's office, to the welded sculpture in the garden to the glass flower on our coffee table. I LOVE her work... perhaps even more than she does. I like to remind her to the time when I intercepted the garden sculpture when it was on its way to the dumpster.

She likes stars, tattoos, dancing, teaching, road trips, music and coffee (at times with ice cream in it). I kid you not, she travels with instant coffee from Starbucks, which is only one of the many reasons why I love her.

In essence, Emily is a natural born artist- seeing the world and life in colors most of us are unable to see. Thank you Emily for dedicating your weekend to Echoes. We really appreciate you.

Maggie is an artistic, gifted, beautiful, intelligent, inspiring teenager.

She is the eldest of 6 kids, and mature well beyond her 17 years of age.

I truly enjoyed this peaceful session as she played and sang songs.

I don't get to use the word "peaceful" very often when describing sessions, but it is the only way to describe this one...

This precious little girl and her parents are returning clients. I had the pleasure of photographing this family when she was just 10 weeks old. Now, she is 1! I had no idea when I started this business that I would be able to really follow children as they grew through such momentous stages of life. It is amazing!

Rusty Treasure

Pete photographed this amazing old car in a nearby field.

Isn't it such a treasure?!

There is something so nostalgic about a worn out vehicle... especially when it is used as a lawn ornament (which I am sure has to do with my southern roots)!

Pete commented on how he could just imagine that this vehicle was probably once a family car. In its prime, it may have proudly escorted its caretakers to work, school, church, weddings and funerals. I cannot even begin to calculate how many times the doors were opened, closed or slammed. Then something ended. Perhaps the "clicking" sound in the engine was more of a problem than anticipated. Or maybe its joy-riding life was shortened by an unexpected encounter with a telephone pole. Or perhaps it ran the miles it was intended to run, and it now lays to rest in our neighboring field. I can only guess how this vehicle served humanity in its time.

Regardless of its past life, it draws us near now. Even in its rusted, warped existence, we come close. We examine the intricate and vintage detail. It calls us in its silence to wonder.

We had the privilege of photographing a wedding for friends of ours. Monnie and Wilson are incredible people to be around. It is impossible not to relish in their free-spirits while you are in their presence. We truly enjoyed photographing and "attending" their wedding as honored guests. Fall and the Botanical Gardens provided a wonderful scene to photograph Jackson and his parents. Jackson is such an observant and relaxed little boy. We look forward to watching this little man grow!

I had the pleasure of photographing her, her older brothers and her parents.

It was very rewarding to hear one of the boys exclaim, "I like taking pictures!"

That lets us know we are doing some right!

We like to refer to our children sessions as "guided play times".

As photographers, we can only dream of shoots like this one. Katie and Joel celebrated their one year marriage anniversary and wanted portraits in their fabulous wedding attire! Katie, the ever beautiful bride is a great model. She was glowing throughout the entire session. Her excitement was contagious. Thanks to both of you for allowing us to celebrate your marriage with you- a year later! You are both stunning, and it is a joy watching your love grow.

I think these images speak for themselves, but in case you are wondering: adoring grandparents, amazing child, giggles and love.

In fact, these three people mean a lot to me. They are my parents and my niece. Addison has graced us with her beautiful face for a year and a half now. I absolutely loved hanging out with them. Many of our shots came from playing "Addison Ping Pong"! I acted like I was going to "get her", and she would run back to my parents (her grandparents). Then they would do the same. This was truly a "guided play time"!

Our pastors asked me to prepare images that show the concepts of the "Beattitudes" in nature. Let me just say, the way God speaks to us through nature is so powerful. He reveals the complexities of His thoughts, His desires for us over and over and over again in the intricacies of natural objects and processes. It is amazing how many times nature echoes the Truth and love the Creator to us- even on the short distance from our front doors to our cars. Most of the images I shot were of scenes just on my street like this wildflower:
